Well that movie was assigned in one of Nolen's classes, and I hated watching it so much that I've been crashing that very same class for the past two weeks. I don't know why. Anyway, today in Nolen's class that I'm not in, we watched this movie. It was much better than The Secret because this was an actual movie. It's far from perfect of course. It does nothing interesting with it's standard documentary format, it's overly simplistic, and it's definitely a fair bit exploitative in nature. But at it's core I have to admit that it's a wee bit inspiring and while it may not hold the key to happiness, it offers a good amount of reasonable advice that at the very least probably helps people become a bit happier. Still a bit on the dull side though. C+ My therapist recommended this when I told her I thought happiness was just a bullshit bourgeois propaganda tool used to sell an unattainable lifestyle. Unsurprisingly, I appreciated the bits of the doc that insinuated communism is the key to true happiness.

No one deserves any less than that. i passed out while watching this forgot i watched this in high school psych class now watched for college psych class. nice footage, kinda dodgy conclusions. appreciate the length. first title watched via TUBI first title watched while at work haha *late review* i had to watch this for a seminar i'm taking about the effects of media on childhood development, and i'm torn on how to feel. it is an idealistic and patronizing look at the meaning of happiness. it is also a painfully simple and trivialized answer to the question of how to achieve happiness. to show these stereotypical looks at groups around the world is polarizing and distant from being able to apply the lessons from extreme grief/poverty to mainstream stress and factors that contribute to unhappiness. though, i wholeheartedly agree with the core message & values it is attempting to teach through the field of positive psychology.

Reminded me of course of the bit from the Grundrisse: "Real wealth is the developed productive power of all individuals. The measure of wealth is then not any longer, in any way, labor time, but rather disposable time. " Some parts of the film, however, were a bit tragic and more of the usual bootstraps happiness stories you usually see featured on the local news as mood-booster segments (but always trigger intense superstitious feelings in me). When the film was through, I did not appreciate being reminded that individualism is part of the dominant U. S. ideology and that I still can't find anyone to start a commune with me. Surely I agree with some other reviews: It'is not quite organized. It hasn't the best shot documentary. After watching this I get depressed. But... It sure has a lot of valid information, researchs and statistics over decades in psychology and psychiatry that comproves the principal reasons for happyness. It has too, some perpections of people around the world about what it takes to be happy, which is certainly interesting.
