(credit: Philadelphia International Records) PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A bit of the Philly sound is gone, with the death of one of the original members of the Intruders, a popular local soul music group that rose to prominence almost 50 years ago. Robert Edwards was a backup singer, and the oldest member of the group which formed in the early 1960s. But it was their 1968 classic "Cowboys to Girls" that shot "Big Sonny" and company to the top of the national charts as the Geator, Jerry Blavat, told KYW Newsradio. "They represented the streets of North Philadelphia, the streets of South Philadelphia. They represented the true soul sound at the beginning, " Blavat said. That was the same time producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff were crafting the Philly Sound. Gamble's son, Chuck, runs the empire they built, Philadelphia International Records. "They teamed to have hits with them and it was a joy for them to record them, " Gamble said. Among the other Intruders hits in the 1960s and 1970s were "Together, " "I'll Always Love My Mama" and "Love Is Like A Baseball Game. "
In 1973, the group releases the phenomenal album Save The Children which included the smash hits, I Wanna Know Your Name and I'll Always Love My Mama, written by Gamble, Huff, McFadden and Whitehead. Masters of the Sound of Philadelphia, The Intruders appeared on the Philadelphia based TV shows – Jerry Blavat, Hy Lit and Georgie Woods; on the west coast The Joey Bishop Show; and on national TV shows such as Soul Train. In 1973, they also joined Billy Paul and The O'Jays in a Philly International European tour showcasing the Sound of Philadelphia to their overseas audience. In 1975, The Intruders released their final album, Energy of Love and in 1976 after 15 remarkable years, Little Sonny, Bird, Phil and Big Sonny- the original Intruders disbanded. With 26 R&B chart records and a legacy of being one of the best male vocal groups demonstrating Philly soul, the demand for their sound persevered. In the early eighties, Eugene "Bird" Daughtry formed a new group without the other original members of The Intruders.

"Intruders, " once called "Shut In" on the fest circuit, is an effective home invasion thriller with interesting performances and tight pacing … until it's not. Like so many genre films, "Intruders" can't quite figure out its final act, and this one devolves from a thrilling predator-and-prey game into something closer to " Saw. " Director Adam Schindler is better with actors than a lot of young horror directors—resulting in the tightness of that first half—but can't quite get a handle on where the movie needs to go from there. The result is a promising film that leaves a bad taste in your mouth, like a meal well-presented on the plate that just doesn't fill you up. Anna ( Beth Riesgraf) is an agoraphobic young woman who hasn't left the family house in a decade. Her brother Conrad ( Timothy T. McKinney) is her only companion, but he's dying in the film's opening scenes. A nice Meals on Wheels guy ( Rory Culkin) is one of Anna's few connections to the outside world. These opening scenes define Anna's world well, and Riesgraf is very good in them, conveying someone who's actually more scared of going out her front door than anything that might come through it.

But somewhere along the way, the first Shut In was renamed Intruders (not to be confused with the 2012 Clive Owen film), but a turd by any other name is still a turd. The Plot Following the death of her brother Conrad from cancer, Anna (Beth Riesgraf) develops a paralyzing case of agoraphobia, preventing her from taking a step outside their childhood home -- even when it comes time for Conrad's funeral. Presuming she'll be gone for the ceremony, a trio of men -- leader J. P. (Jack Kesy), his apprehensive brother Vance (Joshua Mikel) and resident psychopath Perry (Martin Starr) -- break into her house seeking a stash of money she unwisely flashed a day earlier.

Kenny Gamble's mother Ruby, the inspiration for "I'll Always Love My Mama", died March 10, 2012 in Mount Airy, Pennsylvania, at age 96. Cowboys to Girls... and cover versions [ edit] " Cowboys to Girls " (R&B No. 1, Pop #6), the only chart topping single of their career, was a 1968 Top 10 Pop and R&B smash that was awarded an RIAA gold disc for one million sales in mid-May 1968. [2] During the late 1970s and early 1980s, their music was popular on the West Coast among Latino, specifically Chicano, youth, as evidenced by their covers by the Hacienda Brothers and Tierra. Daughtry died of cancer on December 25, 1994 at age 55, and lead singer Sam "Little Sonny" Brown committed suicide by jumping off the Strawberry Mansion Bridge on April 21, 1995 at age 54.
